The Sorghum Promotion, Research and Information Board met for the first time this week in Washington D.C. The board will chart the course for how to spend the money being collected from producers by the new checkoff that started in June.

Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer swore in the members of the board on Tuesday, USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service provided orientation and officers were elected.

"We had a very productive meeting this week at USDA's headquarters and were able to make important decisions that will allow this checkoff program to accomplish its mission of improving profitability for sorghum producers," said newly-elected President of the Board, Bill Greving, of Prairie View, Kan. "I am honored to have been elected President of this Board and look forward to serving sorghum producers nationwide in this critical transition time for the sorghum industry."

The money generated by the checkoff may go for everything from developing new varieties to new grass control methods to a campaign to let farmers know that sorghum is a viable low cost option for them. USDA estimates the checkoff will bring in around $12 million a year.
