In a surprising move the Argentine Senate voted down the sliding-scale export tax on grain that was imposed earlier this year by executive order of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez. Farmers carried out a series of crippling strikes in protest of the tax that prompted the Fernandez to send it to Congress for ratification. The House narrowly passed it last week before the Senate took it up.
Expected to be close, the vote ended in a tie after 18 hours of debate. Argentine Vice President Julio Cobos broke the tie early Thursday morning voting against the tax. "I do not believe that a law works that does not offer a solution to this conflict," says Cobos. "History will judge me, I don't know how."
