Sign-up Begins for Crop Disaster Program

Farmers can now sign-up for quality crop losses from the past three years.

Crop disaster sign-up for quality losses between 2005 and 2007 began Monday. This is the second half of a series of crop disaster programs Congress approved last year.

"Last fall we began sign-up for what we call the quantity loss portion of this program, but also embedded in that legislation was provisions to pay for quality losses," says Farm Service Agency Deputy Administrator John Johnson. "The quality loss provision was very complex, required very complicated software to be developed; the regulations took longer to craft. We have the quantity sign-up out of the way and we have paid out about $1.8 billion to producers and are now ready to begin sign-up for the quality losses in 2005, 2006 and 2007."

Producers can only claim losses in one of the three years. Eligibility requirements can be obtained at local FSA offices.
