Several Groups Return from Brazil

Trip was to see damage of deforestation.

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson has returned from Brazil where he and representatives from the American Farmland Trust; American Soybean Association; and The Nature Conservancy saw firsthand the environmental damage of deforestation in the Amazon. The Nature Conservancy is currently working with farmers, ranchers and government agencies in Brazil to improve land management, stop illegal clearing of forests, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from deforestation.

NFU President Johnson said the people they met with embrace the idea of sustainable forests and ceasing deforestation. But there is a lot of work to be done to reverse the damages caused by reckless activities prior to the recent reversal of deforestation policy, but they are making progress.

"It was eye-opening to see how committed the local municipalities are to doing the right thing in ending deforestation in the region," Johnson said. "The progress the local people are making toward becoming an economy that is not reliant upon such activities that are harmful to the global environment."
