Senator Not Giving Up on Effort to Stop EPA Carbon Rules

Rockefeller insisting that Senate vote on his bill during lame duck.
Compiled by staff
Published: Dec 20, 2010

With time running out on the lame duck session of Congress, Senator John Rockefeller, D-W.Va., has indicated he will seek a vote on his bill to postpone EPA regulation of carbon dioxide emissions for two years. The legislation would suspend Environmental Protection Agency greenhouse gas regulations that are scheduled to take effect on Jan. 2, 2011, giving Congress two years to consider energy legislation.

It remains to be seen if Rockefeller can secure a vote given the packed legislative schedule during the current lame duck session. It is also uncertain whether he can secure the votes needed to pass the bill. The measure came about around the time Senator Lisa Murkowski, R- Alaska, proposed a permanent ban on EPA regulation of carbon. That move failed on a 53 to 47 vote. Rockefeller says Congress should set energy policy, not the EPA.
