Senate Race Adds Former Agriculture Secretary

Mike Johanns officially begins his campaign for U.S. Senate.

Before formally announcing his candidacy for the Senate in Omaha on Wednesday, Mike Johanns kicked off his campaign with an online video embedded on his campaign website.

During appearances in Omaha and Lincoln Wednesday afternoon Johanns was introduced and endorsed by Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, who said Johanns is the right man at the right time to take over the seat being left at the end of next year by Sen. Chuck Hagel.

It was the beginning of a three-day thirteen city announcement tour of Nebraska that Johanns will conclude Friday in Scottsbluff.

Johanns told the crowd, "I want to be your next United States Senator, to put my conservative experience to work for Nebraska families, small business owners, farmers and ranchers."

Two other Republican candidates are in the race; Nebraska Attorney General Jon Brunning and Schuyler businessman Pat Flynn. For the moment no Democratic candidate has declared, although former Nebraska Governor and Senator Bob Kerry has said he will make a decision soon on whether or not to enter the race.
