Senate Aims to Stop EPA Carbon Moves for Now

Amendment to spending bill would temporarily suspend new emissions rules.

They're wheeling and dealing in Congress ahead of the holiday recess and Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev. has made a deal with the GOP that may limit what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can do on carbon emissions, for at least a year. Reid, as part of a deal on a bill to boost the nation's debt limit, is going to allow a Republican amendment that would suspend new emissions rules proposed by EPA. The suspension would be a temporary move.

Recently, EPA moved to regulate carbon emissions as a pollutant, a measure that is opposed by Republicans. Wire reports point out that Republicans are not alone in their concern about the move to regulate greenhouse gases

The one-year delay in the regulations would be the start of a more formal review of the issue by Congress. The EPA has triggered a process of regulating greenhouse gases across industries through the Clean Air Act by declaring those emissions a public danger. A range of groups is opposed to the move saying such regulation could cripple the economy.

Apparently, EPA's efforts are aimed at pressuring Congress into crafting a more economically efficient way to curb emissions, according to a Dow Jones report.
