Senate Ag Spending Bill Slightly Higher than House Passed Version

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture unanimously passed fiscal year 2007 Agriculture Appropriations bill markup Tuesday.
The FY06 Senate bill calls for $18.2 billion in spending, $94.579 billion including mandatory programs. This is higher than the House FY07 bill at $17.808 billion, $93.888 billion including mandatory programs. The President's Request is $17.314 billion, which is up from the FY06 funding level of $16.780.
The bill funds the U.S. Department of Agriculture and related agencies, including rural development, conservation programs, domestic food programs, foreign assistance programs and the Food and Drug Administration. Additionally, the bill specifically provides funding for broadband and delivers a federal commitment to fuel alternatives.
The bill includes $50.750 million for the Distance Learning, Telemedicine and Broadband program for grants and loan subsidy costs which supports a $500 million loan level.
The full Appropriations Committee will consider the bill on Thursday and is expected to approve the bill. Upon that time, it will go to the full Senate for consideration. Once passed it would then go to a joint House-Senate conference committee to resolve differences in the two versions. The reconciled versions then go back to the respective chambers for final passage, then on to the President for his signature.
