Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was in Boulder, Colo. Monday to address attendees of the 2009 North American Biochar Conference. Biochar is a form of carbon capture and storage made from charcoal. During prepared remarks, Vilsack said climate change is one of the great challenges facing the world and new technologies must be embraced to create a green energy economy.
"Farmers, ranchers and forest landowners can play a very important role in addressing climate change and creating a new energy economy," Vilsack said. "Biochar has the potential to create opportunities for the agriculture and forestry sectors to mitigate the effects of a changing climate while creating jobs in rural communities and offering new income sources to landowners."
Vilsack said the creation of new markets for forest products like biochar and bioenergy could significantly bolster sustainable forest management, forest restoration and rural jobs.
