Legislation that would require utilities to generate 15% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2021 has gained the support of Senators Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and Arlen Specter, D-Pa. That brings to 35 the number of Senators co-sponsoring the legislation that would establish a renewable electricity standard. The bill will need 60 votes for passage.
The bill was introduced this past summer as a standalone bill because it was previously part of the Senate's climate bill that failed to move forward. The bill faces a challenge from the "clean energy standard' introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. That bill includes "alternative" but non-renewable energy sources such as nuclear and "clean coal."
