Sebelius Nominated as HHS Secretary

President working to complete cabinet.

Published: Mar 3, 2009

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius has accepted President Obama's invitation to become his Secretary of Health and Human Services. This move puts Sebelius right in the middle of the new administration's effort to overhaul the nation's health-care system.

"Kathleen knows health care inside and out," Obama said. "Fixing what's wrong with our health care system is no longer just a moral imperative, but a fiscal imperative."

If confirmed by the Senate, Sebelius would inherit a sprawling department of 65,000 employees responsible for public health, food safety, scientific research, and the administration of the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which serve 90 million Americans. The solvency of the programs is yet another worry confronting the administration, which has vowed to take on entitlement reform.

Sebelius' confirmation would also fill a Cabinet position originally slated to go to former Senator Tom Daschle, who withdrew from consideration last month over his failure to pay back taxes.
