According to U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab, China should take a more proactive approach into global trade talks. The comments came just after Doha round of World Trade Organization discussions broke down in Germany last week.
"China is a member of the WTO that has a great deal to gain from a successful Doha round, and a great deal to lose from the failure of the Doha round," Schwab says. China joined the WTO in 2001, and was part of the failed meeting that included the U.S., EU, Brazil, and India.
Many countries have worried that opening their markets would result in a flood of cheap imports from China.
"If China is just looking at its defensive interests, then I think that's a very sad state of affairs," Schwab says.
