Safety Approval Granted to E85 Pumps
Certification will aid the expansion of E85 locations.

Last year Underwriters Laboratories suspended safety certifications on pumps for dispensing E85. Although no problems with the equipment had been found, they felt more testing was needed on the new components of E85 pumps. Because of the suspension, additional pumps were not added due to liability concerns of dealers.
According to the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council, manufacturers of pump equipment are eager to submit new dispensers for approval. The certification will allow expansion of locations offering E85.
"It's no secret the ethanol industry has been expanding rapidly," says Robert White, EPIC's Director of Operations. "Developments like this are what the expansion has been based upon, and we'll continue efforts to create both demand for and supply of this clean, homegrown fuel."
Projections show that in the next year the number of E85 stations is expected to double, with more than 2,600 locations across the U.S. With more flex-fuel vehicles being built every day, the potential demand for E-85 is tremendous. If the six million flex-fuel vehicles on the road today used only E85, the demand would increase by more than five billion gallons a year. Greater access to E85 will create more demand and more widespread use.
