Asian soybean rust now confirmed in 19 counties in four states.
Soybean rust continues to spread slowly in the southern United States. Officials confirmed an additional rust find in a sentinel plot in Poplarville, Miss., Friday. The latest finds brings the total confirmations to 19 counties in four states.
The plot is located approximately 70 miles from the Lucedale location where rust was confirmed positive on July 18, 2005. This sentinel plot will be destroyed like the sentinel plot in George County was destroyed.
USDA's Web site is tracking the movement and projects that weather conditions will remain favorable for disease development from previous depositions in parts of southeastern Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and northern Florida through the rest of this week.
Although the plot will be destroyed as soon as possible, the inoculum potential appears to be low.
