Russia Wants Relaxed WTO Rules

Ag minister asks for special conditions for ag products.

Published: Jan 20, 2009

During a speech in Berlin last Friday, Russian Ag Minister Alexei Gordeyev asked that the World Trade Organization ease rules on food and agricultural products saying these special conditions would help Russian agriculture modernize. Russia needs significant investments to modernize farms, including access to funds and credit.

"In recent months, many countries have put aside considerations of global trading regulations, including subsidies for industries, to save their economies," Gordeyev said. "Perhaps it's a bold of me to say, but it seems like most countries have forgotten the WTO rules and are doing what is in their best interests economically."

For more than 15 years Russia has been negotiating to join the WTO, but recent Russian tariffs on imported automobiles and threats of duties on timber have delayed talks. Gordeyev told reporters Saturday that Russia has gone through virtually all of the necessary procedures and should join the WTO in 2009.
