For months Russia has locked out U.S. poultry products because U.S. poultry carcasses are normally washed down with a chlorine rinse, a practice recently banned in Russia. During that time Undersecretary of Agriculture Jim Miller has been saying that he was hopeful a final agreement would be reached to reestablish access to the Russian market for U.S. poultry.
On Thursday at a White House news conference President Obama, after meeting with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, told reporters," Today we have reached an agreement that will allow the United States to begin exporting our poultry products to Russia once again. I want to thank President Medvdedev and his team for resolving this issue, which is of such importance to American business."
Russia had been one of the top buyers of U.S. poultry with yearly purchases of $800 million.
