Russian officials want to reduce their nation's dependence on imported pork and poultry meats. According to the Vice Prime Minister of the Russian Federation the Russian pork market was provided with 29% imports last year. For the poultry market it was 36%. The Vice Prime Minister says that's too much and adds the dynamics have changed in favor of domestic produce.
A contributing factor is the reduction of meat production in Russia. A number of the stock, both poultry and pork, is three times less and the beef production is 2.5 times. And meat and poultry consumption per capita has reduced from 31 kg in 1999 to 16.6 kg.
The Vice Prime Minister suggests failure to improve the production of beef at home risks being confronted with real deficiency. He says small farmers, entrepreneurs and private households could raise pedigree stock in the country and it would mean thousands of new jobs in the rural areas.
