Funding in the amount of $6.2 million is being awarded by the USDA Rural Development's Rural Community Development Initiative Program. Thirty-eight community based development organizations, Indian tribes and other groups in 23 states will receive funding to promote economic growth in low-income rural areas.
"These funds support USDA's partnership with rural America," says acting Ag Secretary Chuck Conner. "In Wisconsin for example, workshop training will assist federally recognized tribes in their ongoing efforts to provide healthy, energy efficient affordable housing for their families. This 'green affordable housing initiative' is an excellent example of how rural community leaders are investing in the future of their community."
Matching funds double the grant amounts must be obtained by recipients. Public and non-profit intermediary organizations receive the grants and provide them to recipients, contingent on their meeting grant conditions.
