All locks on the Illinois River went back into service just before the New Year holiday, after flood waters over the previous weekend stopped barge traffic. Flood waters fell by as much as 12 feet in some areas in as little as 24 hours.
While locks have reopened, according to wire service reports, water levels remain high on portions of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and could continue to slow barge traffic. In some areas along the Illinois River, water levels are too high for barges to load out for transport.
The Coast Guard advisory along 75 miles of the upper Mississippi River was still in effect before the New Year holiday. The area near St. Louis is still experiencing rising water levels.
