RFA Files Motion to Intervene

Group is challenging the environmental community's petition.

The Renewable Fuels Association has filed a motion to intervene in the Friends of the Earth lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency concerning implementation of the Renewable Fuels Standard. RFA also continues to challenge the Petitions for Reconsideration filed by environmental groups in an effort to thwart the goals of the RFS.

The environmental community in its petitions asserts the use of biofuels will lead to greater global oil consumption. They're calling it the Global Rebound Effect, but RFA President and CEO Bob Dinneen calls it nonsense. He says with this logic even efforts to improve efficiencies like gas mileage or Energy Star appliances must suffer a carbon penalty.

RFA's filing notes that the group has considerable expertise in the ethanol production process and analyses of the impact of ethanol use in gasoline on air quality, and can, therefore, provide unique assistance to the Court in this case. If intervention is not granted, RFA says its ability to defend the interests of its members in this proceeding will be severely prejudiced.
