Republicans Want EPA Cost Estimates

Congressmen concerned about cost of Clean Air Act regulations.

Published: Oct 22, 2010

Two key Republican committee members want EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to report on the compliance costs for some 40 proposed or finalized Clean Air Act regulations aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions. In a letter to Administrator Jackson, Representative Joe Barton, R-Texas, the ranking member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, and Representative Michael Burgess, R-Texas, the ranking member of the Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, wrote they are concerned about the highly accelerated pace at which EPA is issuing complex and expensive regulatory proposals under the Clean Air Act.

Their letter continued that just as appropriate implementation of the Clean Air Act is essential for protecting the public health, appropriate consideration of the economic and employment impacts of regulations under the Act is essential for protecting the nation's economic health. EPA's available compliance cost estimates identify at least eight rules that will cost $1 billion or more.

Those programs include: Proposed Ozone Standards; Final Light-Duty Vehicle Rule; Proposed Industrial Boiler Rule; Final Nitrogen Dioxide NAAQs Standard; final Sulfur Dioxide NAAQs Standards; and the Proposed Transport Rule.
