Congressional Quarterly reports that House Republican leaders are seeking a face-to-face meeting with President Obama to discuss their proposals to stimulate the nation's economy. That meeting could come as soon as Thursday.
Meanwhile, the U.S. House Appropriations Committee spent Wednesday developing the $550 billion spending portion of the American Recover and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The House Ways and Means Committee is expected to hold its markup meeting concerning the $275 million in tax provisions, in the Act on Thursday.
Some of the funding questions being asked deal with transportation. There is some thought that it may not be such a quick fix. The $355 billion for highway construction and other programs would be spread out and the last of the dollars would be spent in 2019. Some are already talking about a follow-up package to provide for future course corrections.
House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, has called the bill disappointing. He says it's just more of the same kind of wasteful spending that we have seen in the past. The hope is the bill will be on President Obama's desk by Friday, Feb. 13.
