The Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture held a workshop in May 2006 to look into concerns about federal regulations of agricultural biotechnology. Representatives from state and federal government and a host of experts in related topics attended the meeting and considered regulatory schemes for agriculture.
A new report relates details from the conference, including some of the following ideas:
The current federal regulatory system for agricultural biotechnology, known as the Coordinated Framework, does not take advantage of the necessary interaction between state and federal regulators. States can develop more formal partnerships with federal agricultural officials by meeting their obligation to protect the safety and economic interests of residents in their state.
Although states do not seek standing equal to the federal government in agricultural biotechnology regulation, state officials often find themselves having to answer to public concerns on the topic.
Many state officials admit that they need to better understand the complex federal regulatory system in order to be able to partner with relevant federal agencies. Many state officials also wish to see a formalized level of cooperation, coordination and collaboration between federal and state agencies on biotech issues.
