The Washington International Renewable Energy Conference held in the nation's capital the first week of March was highly successful in promoting the increase of renewable energy worldwide. By the conclusion of WIREC 2008 more than 100 pledges had been received to increase renewable energy, and more than 30 have since been made. The U.S. announced they will continue to accept pledges through this Friday, April 4, 2008.

"The pledges are truly the most important outcome of this conference," says Ambassador Reno Harnish, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs.  "We chose to continue accepting pledges for one month after the conference when we saw extensive interest in contributing meaningful commitments."

Several countries made pledges during the closing session of WIREC 2008 and since then many nations and companies have made pledges. Rwanda pledged that by 2012 90% of their electricity will come from renewable sources, Volvo pledged to cut by 50% their energy consumption by 2010, and 26 of the United States committed to standards that require a certain amount of electricity from renewable sources.

Those interested in finding out more about pledging can find out more at www.wirec2008.gov.
