Friday, a coalition of 33 agriculture, conservation, energy, and environmental organizations and businesses sent a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., asking for funding to be maintained for farm bill energy programs in a Fiscal Year 2011. The letter states that support for renewable energy production from America's farms, ranches and forestlands has never been more critical as our country seeks greater economic security and energy independence.
Roger Johnson, President of the National Farmers Union, says across rural America, renewable energy projects supported by farm bill energy programs continue to drive economic growth and provide jobs.
NFU policy supports a balanced energy policy that seeks energy independence by 2025 for the United States and, at the same time, protects our nation's environment and recognizes the special energy needs of America's agricultural sector and its potential contributions.
