The United States is hosting the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference 2008. The conference, scheduled for March 4-6, has previously been held in Bonn and Beijing, and is a chance for government, private sector, and non-governmental leaders to jointly address the goal of advancing renewable energy. State Department Undersecretary Paula Dobriansky hosted stakeholders in the renewable energy industry this week to discuss goals and possible outcomes of the conference.

"This conference will play a key role in addressing energy security and climate change," Dobriansky says. "And it will support the ongoing work of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change."

Dobriansky says WIREC 2008 will also carry over themes presented at last months's major economies meeting on energy, security and climate change.

"WIREC will also provide a platform to promote strategies for the development and rapid adoption of renewable energy systems worldwide," Dobriansky says.

Agriculture Undersecretary Thomas Door, was in attendance at this weeks meeting, says this conference will increase political support and public awareness for renewable energy. He says cooperation between developed and developing nations will be crucial in advancing renewable energy financial and physical infrastructure around the world.
