By an overwhelming vote of 391 to 28 on Friday the U.S. House of Representatives passed Resolution 72 which directs certain standing committees to inventory and review existing, pending, and proposed regulations and orders from agencies of the Federal Government, particularly with respect to their effect on jobs and economic growth. In the past, House Democrats complained that House Republicans needed to focus on job creation rather than examining regulations. The GOP, which controls the House, believes limiting regulations in this fashion is a way to foster job growth.
House Ag Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said farmers and ranchers are under attack from an administration that fails to realize that rural America’s economy is dependent on agriculture. Lucas promised to hold a series of hearings on these regulations that he said would show the real-world consequences of them.
The Committee is already looking at the impact of financial regulatory reform on agriculture and this coming week plans to review the various definitions of rural applied under programs operated by USDA, scrutinize the regulatory burdens posed by requiring pesticide applicators to obtain Clean Water Act permits and review the state of the farm economy.
