R-CALF USA Sees Positives in Competition Workshops

Bullard praises commitment shown to finding ways to restore competition.

Responses continue to pour in on last Friday's competition workshop, sponsored by the Departments of Justice and Agriculture. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard believes the organizers are absolutely committed to listen to producers and find ways to restore competition in markets, and are serious about correcting the ongoing antitrust and anticompetitive practices that are harming industry.

Bullard says he expects to hear huge opposition from the giant multinational packers. "They certainly don't want to lose the significant advantage they enjoy when antitrust laws and the Packers and Stockyards Act are not properly enforced," Bullard said. "We hope these workshops lead to changes that will allow independent U.S. cattle producers to once again capture their fair share of profits in a competitive marketplace."

The R-CALF leader thinks U.S. cattle producers need to take a serious view of the ongoing investigation into the competitiveness of the U.S. cattle industry. Bullard says it may be the one and only opportunity to bring forth the facts necessary to reverse the ongoing contraction of the industry. Bullard hopes R-CALF USA members will attend any future workshops, in order to provide real-life examples from farm and ranch families that describe the erosion of competition that has occurred in our industry.
