The National Agricultural Statistics Service has announced it will change some market hog weight group categories used in its quarterly Hogs and Pigs report. This change will begin with the Dec. 30 report and will align NASS data with international trade data. These changes will result in a more uniform analysis of the North American hog inventory.
Starting with the December report, NASS will report market hog weights in an "under 50 pounds" group and a "50-119 pounds" group instead of "under 60 pounds" and "60-119 pounds." Other market weight groups will remain the same.
The Dec. 30 Hogs and Pigs report will include national and state level data for the new weight groups dating back to March 2008 in order to allow for historical analysis of the new weight groups.
