Put Your Smart Phone to Work

Mini-spreadsheets speed work in the field.
Arlan Suderman
Published: May 1, 2009

Mark Kirkman of Vernon, Michigan put his smart phone to work solving problems in the field. He developed mini-spreadsheets, formatted for simplic-ity and to screen size. He uses the spreadsheets to calculate fertilizer and chemical application rates, as well as mixing rates.

He finds the calculating functions of the spreadsheets to be quite handy in the field as well. Kirkman makes field and application notes at the bottom and synchronizes the spreadsheets with his office computer. However, Kirk-man is also setting up his farm as a WiFi hot spot to broaden the use of his smart phone without the $50 monthly access fees.

We’ve packaged his spreadsheets into one file and made it our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. Download it using the link below.

Do you have a spreadsheet that’s made a difference on your operation that you’d be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at FarmFutures@farmprogress.com with a description of the spreadsheet. We’ll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial program as our Spreadsheet of the Month.

First of all thanks a lot for the great and informative entry. It is really great that our world is so developed now. Now we can use smart phone to solve many problems. I totally agree that the spreadsheets are really help in various situations. I have to admit that I often use it for myself.  I hope that after several years we could use much more mobile phones in our work. Thanks a lot one more time for the great information and I will be waiting for other great posts from you in the nearest future.

Regards,
Matt Peterson from mobile development

How did he set up the farm as a wifi hotspot?  All I can get is Verizon broadband MiFi and that is expensive and limited!
