Presidential Candidates Aim for Rural Voters

Both candidates make moves this week to draw rural voters to their campaigns.

Published: Oct 10, 2008

Earlier this year many analysts predicted that rural voters were likely to decide this year's presidential election. Actions taken by both sides this week would seem to indicate the candidates are buying into that assessment.

The GOP ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin announced the formation of a Farm & Ranch Team National Steering Committee to advise on agricultural and rural issues. Several members of Congress and agricultural leaders from the state and national level were included in the committee.

Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Barack Obama has made a significant effort to speak with farm broadcasters this week and outline his thoughts on agriculture, renewable fuels, and trade.

So it appears that both sides are realizing the impact rural voters will have in the election that is less than a month away and are trying to sway that sector to their side.
