Immigration policy impacts agriculture and a wide range of other industries; and Congress has been debating policy on the issue for several years. Today, President Bush made comments about the effort noting the need to make progress.
"We believe we can have rational, important immigration policy based upon law and reflects our deep desire to be a compassionate and decent nation," Bush says. "Our government must enforce our borders."
He promoted a guest worker program that encourage people to register their presence so "we know how they are and says to them if you're doing a job an American won't do you're welcome here for a period of time to do that job."
He notes the immigration debate is vital and there's a need for debate of the issue. He urged people to make sure the rhetoric is "in accord with our traditions."
"Now is the time for the United States Congress to act on to get an immigration plan that is comprehensive and rational and achieves important objectives," he says.
During a press conference in early March, Ag Secretary Mike Johanns was quizzed about immigration policy. Currently, the bills in the House and Senate are quite different. One issue Johanns says the Administration will not support is an amnesty program for illegal immigrants already in the country.
