Pork Center Developing Swine Schools

A grant will offer students interested in the swine industry a chance to learn more.

The USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service has given a $450,000 three-year grant to the U.S. Pork Center of Excellence to develop swine schools.

The decline in the number of swine programs at universities prompted the Pork Center, which is based at the National Swine Research and Information Center on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, to propose establishing swine schools.

The center will develop courses in different areas of swine production, test them and evaluate the results. Students that participate in the project would be able to take an intensive swine course followed by a summer internship in a production facility that would give them experience as well as college credit.

The U.S. Pork Center of Excellence was established in 2005 as a public-private partnership to combine the academic expertise in research, teaching and extension in pork production.
