Pork and Beef Exports Still Lagging Compared to 2008

Increases seen for pork from 2007 numbers.

Published: Oct 14, 2009

According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation the global pace of U.S. pork and beef exports lost ground in August compared to 2008. USMEF says demand for U.S. pork is strong in Japan and Mexico but offset by limited market access in China and Russia. For beef USMEF largely attributes the overall decline in exports to a difficult global market for beef variety meat.

Pork plus variety meat exports declined 22% in volume, 28% in value. For the January to August period exports reached 2.67 billion pounds valued at $2.85 billion. That's a decline of 12% in volume and 11% in value from the same timeframe last year. But compared to August 2007, pork exports were 35% larger and accumulated exports through the first eight months of the year were 51% larger than the same period in 2007.

Compared to August 2008, August beef plus beef variety meat exports were down 31% in volume, 37% in value. Exports for January to August reached 1.29 billion pounds at a value of just over $2 billion. That represents a 10% drop in volume and 14% in value from the same period last year.
