Planting is Beginning to Wrap Up
Weather remains issue for corn and soybeans.

Corn and soybean planting continue to be slowed by cool, wet weather in the Midwest. Corn is about done with 92% of intended acreage planted and emergence has come on this week reaching 89%, a bit behind the normal 95%. Heavy rains this week have also kept soybeans from being planted. According to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey, 77% of soybeans have been planted compared to the normal 89%.
"It's really interesting that the first of the major producing states to finish planting this year, and this says something about the wetness in the Midwest, it was North Dakota," Rippey says. "We still see Illinois only two-thirds planted, 66% versus the five-year average of 92%."
Monday's report also was the first time the soybean crop condition was rated and Rippey says it wasn't the brightest picture.
"Fifty-seven percent good to excellent and 8% very poor to poor," Rippey says. "Last year at this time we were looking at 70% good to excellent."
The heavy rains and potential flooding in many areas of the Midwest also caused some decline in corn conditions with the amount rated good to excellent dropping to 60% and poor to very poor increasing to 9%.
