Ownership Change at Germplasm Company

Syngenta Seeds and DuPont dissolve their Greenleaf joint venture.

Published: Nov 10, 2010

Greenleaf Genetics, the ground-breaking partnership between Syngenta and DuPont to market germplasm to seed companies underwent a major change this week. Syngenta assumes full ownership of Greenleaf Genetics, dissolving the joint venture between the two companies.

In the joint press announcement, company officials say the move allows Syngenta and Pioneer to pursue independent licensing strategies for their respective proprietary corn and soybean genetics and biotech traits.

Originally launched in 2004, by Syngenta, Greenleaf became a joint venture with Pioneer in April 2006. It will now operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Syngenta Seeds.

In announcing the move, Davor Pisk, chief operating officer, Syngenta Seeds says "with full control of Greenleaf Genetics, we will be able to move more quickly in broadening access to our rapidly expanding portfolio of...traits and germplasm." He adds the move shows the company's commitment to helping independent seed companies offer choice to growers.

Paul Schickler, president, Pioneer Hi-Bred, says his company valued the joint venture that "will continue to fulfill an important role in the seed industry by offering farmers choices in new and unique selection of corn and soybean products. Pioneer looks forward to a continued relationship with both Greenleaf Genetics and Syngenta."
