Each month more than 26 million people receive help buying food through the USDA Food Stamp program. Currently the program reaches only about 65% of those available for food assistance programs. USDA is releasing $1 million in outreach grants to public and private nonprofit community and faith-based organizations to improve awareness of eligibility for the programs.
Deputy Undersecretary of Agriculture Kate Houston says the money will help dispel myths about the program and help change the image of the nutrition assistance programs.
"For a long time there was a stigma about participating," Houston says. "We want to make very clear that these are nutrition assistance programs; they are not welfare programs. We are doing a lot to try to change that image."
