Speculation has been circulated that there is a renewed emphasis on finally completing the Doha Round of World Trade Organization global trade talks. USDA Deputy Undersecretary Darcy Vetter has participated in the negotiations in Geneva and confirms this.
"We've seen some increased activity in Geneva among trade negotiators these past few months," Vetter said. "The APEX Ministerial this past fall, the G20 meeting in November; all really emphasize the need for negotiators to use 2011 as the year to finally get a breakthrough in those WTO talks."
Vetter says one opportunity for the U.S. in advancing the Doha Round forward is in the meat sector, specifically the meat industry's market access into a number of different countries.
"The formula that we see in front of us that we'll be working on, coming to closure in Geneva, does have some real market access benefits for U.S. beef," Vetter said. "We think that they would benefit tremendously from access into some of our key partners including the EU and others."
