As the election draws near, a final push is being made to educate voters in California about Proposition 2 which would ban modern confinement housing for egg-laying hens, sows and veal calves. It is supported by animal rights and vegetarian organizations, including Farm Sanctuary and the Humane Society of the United States. According to the Animal Agriculture Alliance, this law would have possible negative consequences to animal welfare that will be hard to correct. The Alliance also cited among its reasons for opposing the measure higher rates of death in non-cage systems, increased rates of smothering, and increased incidences of aggression.
A long list of groups has signed on in opposition of the proposed law including the American Veterinary Medical Association, California Restaurant Association, and the California Retailers Association. Late Wednesday California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined the fray urging Californians to vote no on the California ballot initiative.
Major California newspapers have also come down against Prop 2, including the Los Angeles Times, Orange Country Register and San Francisco Chronicle. The papers call the initiative rigid and indicated the language was excessive and went too far.
