President Obama is to travel to Capitol Hill Friday morning to meet behind closed doors with House Democrats. Washington observers believe the visit was designed to insure 218 votes when the House votes on the sweeping health care overhaul Saturday evening.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., says they will have 218. Republicans are expected to stand united in opposition to the bill. Pelosi and her leadership team are working for votes in their caucus, dealing with last-minute controversies over such issues as abortion language and what rights illegal immigrants would have under the bill to get health insurance, even policies they buy without using public funds.
Thursday, the Republican Study Committee held a rally at the U.S. Capitol focusing on health care legislation. Representative Tom Price, R-Ga., said they were there to bring focus and voice to the concerns of the American people about this bill. Price, a physician, called the rally a house call on Washington, saying he has read most of this bill and called it legislative malpractice.
