Obama Administration Launches Rural Tour
Top officials will discuss strengthening rural America at numerous stops.

President Barack Obama announced the launch of his administration's Rural Tour on Tuesday. Over the coming weeks and months the President says top administration officials, including cabinet secretaries, will fan out across the country to hold a series of discussions on how to strengthen rural America.
The first stop is Erie, Penn. on July 1 where Vice President Joe Biden, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and other officials will highlight Recovery Act broadband investments.
"This is something we placed a lot of emphasis on because obviously it's a critical infrastructure for the 21st Century," Obama said. "Towns with high-speed internet service are going to be more economically competitive and are better able to provide educational opportunities and health care services than those without it."
While that's the focus of the first meeting Obama says that's not the sole focus of the tour. He says the administration is also focused on rural development, conservation and other important priorities such as rural education, rural healthcare and increasing national renewable energy supplies. Other stops are planned in Alaska, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
