Oats in Transition

In 2006, oat production was the lowest since USDA began keeping records - in 1866.

However, a study released by North American Millers Association, contracted with Informa Economics, advises oats could have a place as a favored cover crop in the Conservation Reserve Program.

The study suggests that this could increase oat production while reducing government program costs and providing cover for wildlife.

The study found that some of the main reasons for the sharp decline in oat markets are slower progress in advancing oat yields per acre; the surge in biofuel production resulting in acreage shifts towards corn and soybeans; and government support programs giving more support to other crops.
