The sign-up deadline for the Conservation Security Program was originally May 16, but National Resources Conservation Service Chief Arlen Lancaster has announced a two week extension for sign-up.
"It is a difficult time to get folks into the office, to give them time to gather their information even though they've had essentially two years of being in limbo on whether or not this sign-up was going to happen," Lancaster says. "We needed to try to help accommodate some of these concerns."
To help producers who are in the midst of planting or have been hit by natural disasters within some of the 51 eligible watersheds, CSP sign-up has been extended until May 30.
"We would have liked to have been longer," Lancaster says. "But in order to offer a program this year that is really as long as we could wait before we closed the signup and started to work with those producers to get them into their contracts so we could get that money out the door this year."
