Since Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) announced last week that he was not seeking re-election, several names have been thrown around as possible candidates for the seat. One that has received a lot of attention from the media is Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns. He has not responded to questions from reporters about the possibility of his candidacy.
Johanns, who was the Nebraska governor when President Bush tapped him for the Agriculture Secretary's position for his second term, is speaking to the Midwest International Trade Association in Omaha today and will hold a press conference Friday with Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman. Johanns will give the governor's agricultural advisory committee an update on the farm bill while Heineman will discuss trade issues following his recent trade mission to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Speculation is that Secretary Johanns will announce a bid for the Senate this week while in his home state. However; earlier this week he told reporter this trip was planned many months ago and no statement would be made.
