Nine States Detect Soybean Rust
Tennessee and Missouri latest host homes for yield-devastating disease.

Southeastern states continue to send samples to USDA's Animal and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) at Beltsville, Md. And unfortunately most are coming back as positives.
A total of nine southeastern states tested positive in recent weeks
for Asian soybean rust. The latest host states of the yield-devastating disease are located in southern Missouri and Tennessee.
The Missouri Department of Agriculture received official confirmation from USDA-APHIS on Nov. 30, says Laura Sweets, MU Extension plant pathologist with the Commercial Agriculture program.
The samples were collected in New Madrid and Pemiscot counties by Al Wrather, MU plant pathologist, and Grover Shannon, MU soybean breeder, on Nov. 22. Those counties are along the Mississippi River adjoining Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Previously, USDA had identified Asian soybean rust in Crittenden County Ark.
Tennessee Department of Agriculture officials received confirmation Wednesday from the USDA that samples from a soybean field in Shelby County tested positive for Asian soybean rust.
The samples were submitted by Melvin Newman, a University of Tennessee Extension plant pathologist.
