National Farmers Union Vice President Chandler Goule met with senior-level negotiators from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative this week to discuss the Trans-Pacific Partnership and future U.S. trade agreements. NFU supports fair trade and also understands how important international trade is for the rural economy. Goule says NFU understands trade is a necessary part of a robust ag economy, stating NFU is seeking a way to expand trade opportunities while enforcing strict standards.
Goule says the TPP trade negotiation is an important opportunity for the Obama administration to demonstrate its commitment to farmers, ranchers and rural America. The negotiations, according to Goule, will provide the U.S. a long-overdue opportunity to move away from the failed trade model of the past and lay out a new trade framework for the future. He says NFU will support future trade agreements where U.S. farmers, small businesses, rural communities, workers and consumers will benefit because countries must be held to the same food safety as the U.S. in order to protect U.S. consumers from being exposed to unsafe food.
