Florida is reporting another positive Asian soybean rust find on kudzu leaves in Marion County, north and east of two previous 2005 rust finds this season.

According to the University of Florida, the find was confirmed April 8, by the Division of Plant Industry.

The first 2005 detection of soybean rust in FL was a find 2/23 on overwintered foliage of kudzu in Dade City, Pasco Co. That is the most southerly find so far in FL. Note that this map includes all finds to the present (2004-2005). The 2005 finds are the yellow dots on the map.

The USDA announced last week that it is partnering with state universities and agriculture departments by placing sentinel plots across the country.

At this time, USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has provided the funding for more than 300 sentinel plots in 35 states and Puerto Rico, which will be located on both private and public land (university research plots). These states are still in the process of finalizing the precise locations of these sentinel plots. The plots will be planted as early as possible during the growing season in each state.

A table with the number of federally funded APHIS plots in each of these states, can be found at page 8 of the Coordinated Framework for Soybean Rust Surveillance, Reporting, Prediction and Management document available by clicking HERE.

In addition to these sentinel plots, a number of individual states may also add plots on their own and producers will support an additional 400 sentinel plots through check-off funds collected by the United Soybean Board. The distribution of those plots is still being determined and more information will be provided in the near future, as there are updates.
