New Reform Should Apply to Administration Officals Too

Grassley to introduce amendment to health care package.
Compiled by staff
Published: Mar 23, 2010

Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, believes health care reform should apply to the President, Vice President, Cabinet members and top White House staff. He'll offer an amendment to that effect during Senate debate on the health care reconciliation bill this week. Grassley says it's unbelievable that the President and his closest advisors remain untouched by the reforms they pushed for the rest of the country.

An effort to apply any new law to administration political leaders was rejected by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., last December but Grassley says there's no justification for the double standard and he'll continue to work to establish fairness. He says if the overhaul of America's health care system is as good as promised, those who fought for its passage will know first-hand. And if there are problems he says they'll really understand them, as they should. Grassley believes public officials who make the laws or lead efforts to have laws changed should live under those laws.

The Senate legislation approved by the House does include an amendment Grassley sponsored last fall to have members of Congress and their staffs get health insurance through the same health insurance exchanges where health plans for the general public would be available.
