New Record Set for Pork Sales, Beef Also Increases

According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation another monthly pork export record was set in May and beef exports were the highest since December of 2003 when exports dropped because of the case of BSE found in the U.S.
"The shortage in the global meat supply, combined with record pork production in the United States and the continued weak dollar are putting U.S. beef and pork in a very advantageous position in many export markets," said Erin Daley, manager of research and analysis for USMEF.
In May 432.4 million pounds of pork were exported, an increase of 95% from last year and 12% more than the previous record set in April. Nearly 30% of the pork exported in May went to China and Hong Kong. Japan did not import as much pork as China but the value was more than $30 million more than China making Japan the largest market in terms of value. Mexico, Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations were also major importers of U.S. pork.
Beef exports in May were the highest they have been since December of 2003 at 184.6 million pounds, which is 78% of the volume exported in May 2003 and 97% of the value at nearly $309 million. For the period of January through May Mexico, Canada, the Middle East and Japan were key importers of U.S. beef.
