New Biotech Beans Approved

Roundup Ready 2 Yield accepted by Asian nations.

Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan have given final regulatory approval to Monsanto's Roundup Ready 2 yield soybeans.

"Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans are poised to deliver a new yield advantage to U.S. farmers and pave the way for the development of stacked-trait offerings in this oilseed crop," says Robert T. Fraley, Ph.D., chief technology officer and executive vice president of Monsanto Company. "Importantly, this new soybean product is expected to offer farmers a novel way to get more yield out of a single acre of land, a critical step as farmers work to meet the growing food and fuel demands of our world."

Canada and the United States provided approval for the new biotech bean last July, and the regulators in the European Union and China are currently evaluating it through a scientific review.

"More than 90 % of the soybeans planted in the United States this year were biotech varieties," says John Hoffman, American Soybean Association president. "Timely overseas regulatory approvals are critical because growers around the world have rapidly adopted new biotech-enhanced seed varieties as they became available. Livestock farmers and feed industries around the world depend on access to imported, protein-rich soybeans and soybean meal to nourish their animals and meet the food demands of consumers."

A controlled commercial launch of about one to two million acres of Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans is planned for 2009, with a full-scale launch in 2010. This second-generation of Roundup Ready technology will serve as the primary platform for new soybean traits. Five new traits could be ready as soon as 2012.
